Yhteiskantakytkentä, often translated as "common-emitter coupling" or "shared emitter connection," is a fundamental configuration in electronics, particularly for bipolar junction transistors (BJTs). In this arrangement, the emitter terminal of a transistor is connected to a common reference point, typically ground or a negative power supply rail. The input signal is applied to the base of the transistor, and the output signal is taken from the collector.

This circuit configuration is widely used for its voltage amplification properties. The input signal at the base modulates the current flowing through the collector. Due to the transistor's inherent gain, a small change in the base current leads to a larger change in the collector current. This amplified collector current, when passed through a load resistor, produces a larger voltage variation at the output, thus achieving voltage amplification.

A key characteristic of the common-emitter configuration is that it exhibits both voltage and current gain, and it introduces a phase inversion between the input and output signals. This means that a positive-going input voltage pulse will result in a negative-going output voltage pulse, and vice-versa. The exact gain and impedance characteristics are influenced by the transistor's parameters and the surrounding circuit components. This versatility makes it a cornerstone for designing amplifiers and switching circuits in a vast array of electronic devices.
