Yhdistelmäpiirit, or combination circuits in English, are fundamental building blocks in digital electronics. They are electronic circuits where the output at any given time depends solely on the current combination of inputs. Unlike sequential circuits, which have memory and whose output depends on past inputs as well as current ones, combination circuits have no internal memory. This means they react instantly to changes in input signals.

The behavior of a combination circuit can be described by Boolean algebra. Each input and output can be represented by a binary variable (0 or 1), and the logic gates within the circuit perform Boolean operations such as AND, OR, and NOT. These gates are interconnected according to a specific logic function to achieve the desired output for each possible input combination.

Common examples of combination circuits include adders, subtractors, multiplexers, and decoders. Adders perform arithmetic addition, multiplexers select one of several input signals to be routed to a single output, and decoders convert binary coded input into a set of unique output signals. These circuits are essential for performing calculations, data selection, and control functions in a wide range of digital systems, from simple calculators to complex microprocessors. The design and analysis of combination circuits are key skills for digital logic designers.
