Yhdistelmävoimalaitosten

Yhdistelmävoimalaitokset, often translated as combined heat and power (CHP) plants or cogeneration plants, are facilities that produce both electricity and useful heat from a single fuel source. This integrated approach significantly improves overall energy efficiency compared to separate generation of electricity and heat. Typically, a CHP plant generates electricity through a combustion process, such as burning natural gas, biomass, or coal. The heat that would normally be wasted during this electricity generation process is then captured and utilized.

The captured heat can be used for various purposes, including district heating for residential and commercial buildings, industrial processes requiring heat, or even for cooling through absorption chillers. The design of a CHP plant can vary, but common systems involve gas turbines, steam turbines, or internal combustion engines. In a typical cycle, fuel is burned to drive a turbine that generates electricity. The hot exhaust gases or steam from this process are then directed to a heat recovery steam generator or a heat exchanger, where the thermal energy is extracted for secondary use.

The primary advantage of yhdistelmävoimalaitokset is their high energy efficiency. By utilizing both electricity and heat, these plants can achieve overall efficiencies of 70-90% or even higher, whereas traditional power plants generating only electricity might operate at efficiencies of 30-50%. This increased efficiency leads to reduced fuel consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions per unit of energy produced. CHP technology is widely implemented in industrial facilities, large commercial complexes, and district heating networks in many countries.
