Ydinmagneettinen refers to phenomena related to the magnetic properties of atomic nuclei. Atomic nuclei possess intrinsic angular momentum, known as spin, and a magnetic dipole moment associated with this spin. This magnetic moment allows nuclei to interact with external magnetic fields.

The most prominent application of ydinmagneettinen is in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). MRI, on the other hand, applies the same physical principles but focuses on imaging biological tissues. By exploiting the abundance of hydrogen nuclei in water and fat molecules within the body, MRI generates detailed cross-sectional images without the need for ionizing radiation. Different tissues produce distinct signals based on their water content and molecular composition, allowing for the visualization of anatomical structures and the detection of abnormalities.
