Yanya

Yanya is the Turkish name for Ioannina, a city in northwestern Greece. In historical Ottoman and Turkish sources, the name Yanya is commonly used to refer to Ioannina, which is the capital of Epirus and the Ioannina regional unit.

Geography and administration

Ioannina lies on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis, beneath the Pindus mountain range. The old town sits on a hill known as the Kastro, overlooking the lake, while newer districts extend outward. The city functions as a regional administrative, educational, and cultural hub within Epirus.

History

Ioannina has a long history as a regional center of commerce, culture, and governance. It developed as a medieval urban seat and continued to be an important center during Ottoman rule. The Kastro fortress dominates the skyline and remnants of Ottoman architecture remain visible in the city. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Ali Pasha of Ioannina held power in the region, leaving a lasting architectural and historical imprint. Ioannina became part of the modern Greek state in the early 20th century and has since evolved as a center of education and culture in Epirus.
