X509sertifikat

X509sertifikat refers to a digital certificate that conforms to the X.509 standard. This standard is widely used for public key infrastructure (PKI) to verify the identity of users, devices, and organizations. A X.509 certificate contains a public key along with information about the owner of the certificate, such as their name, organization, and geographical location. It also includes information about the issuer of the certificate, which is typically a trusted Certificate Authority (CA). The CA digitally signs the certificate, vouching for the authenticity of the information it contains.

The primary purpose of a X.509 certificate is to establish trust in digital communications. When you encounter a website using HTTPS, for example, your browser uses a X.509 certificate to verify the identity of the website's server. This prevents man-in-the-middle attacks and ensures that you are communicating with the intended party. Certificates are also used for email encryption and signing (S/MIME), secure shell (SSH) connections, and in various other security applications. The certificate contains fields such as the subject's distinguished name (DN), the issuer's DN, the validity period, the serial number, and the public key itself. The algorithms used for the public key and the signature are also specified within the certificate.
