Woodconsumers are organisms that derive energy and nutrition from wood, a complex organic material composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. These organisms can be categorized into several groups, including insects, fungi, and bacteria.

Insects such as beetles and termites are well-known woodconsumers. They have evolved specialized physical and biochemical adaptations to break down the woody tissue, allowing them to feed on the wood's energy stores. Beetles, for instance, use their mandibles to chip away at the wood's surface, while termites employ microorganisms to decompose the cellulose in the wood.

Fungi, particularly species of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, are also significant woodconsumers. Bacteria, including actinomycetes and pseudomonads, can also be woodconsumers. While they are less prominent than insects and fungi, some species of bacteria have been observed to degrade the cellulose and hemicellulose in wood, contributing to the breakdown of the material.
