Wollongong

Wollongong is a coastal city located in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia, approximately 85 kilometers south of Sydney. It is the third-largest city in New South Wales and the eleventh-largest city in Australia by population. The city is situated on a narrow coastal plain between the Illawarra escarpment and the Pacific Ocean.

Historically, the area was inhabited by the Dharawal people. European settlement began in the early 19th century, with the region initially developing around agriculture and timber. Wollongong's economy later boomed with the discovery of coal in the 1840s and the subsequent growth of the steel industry, particularly the establishment of the BHP steelworks in the mid-20th century. While heavy industry has declined, the city has diversified its economy.

Today, Wollongong is a significant regional center with a strong service sector, education, and tourism. It is home to the University of Wollongong, a major research institution. The city is known for its beautiful beaches, scenic escarpment, and a vibrant cultural scene. Key attractions include the Nan Tien Temple, the Royal Botanic Garden Mount Annan (though technically outside the city), and numerous surf breaks. The regional transport network connects Wollongong to Sydney and other surrounding areas.
