Witzenhausens

The Witzenhausen family is a noble family with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. Originating from Thuringia, Germany, the family's name is derived from the village of Witzenhausen, which is located in the present-day state of Hesse.

Throughout the centuries, the Witzenhausens have played an important role in European politics, military, and cultural life. In the 14th century, they rose to prominence as powerful landed nobles in the Holy Roman Empire. They held various titles, including counts and burgraves, and were granted large estates and territories.

One notable member of the Witzenhausen family is Kaspar von Witzenhausen (c. 1320-1387), a commander in the late Middle Ages, who served under Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor. Kaspar is also credited with writing the chronicle "Chronik der Familie von Witzenhausen," which provides valuable insights into the family's history and the social and cultural context of their time.

The Witzenhausens were also prominent in the Protestant Reformation. Marcellus II von Witzenhausen (c. 1500-1557), a nephew of Kaspar, served as a close advisor to Martin Luther and was a prominent figure in the struggles of the early Reformation.

In the eighteenth century, the Witzenhausen family lost some of its power and influence, but continued to play a role in local politics and society. The last count, Karl Georg Friedrich von Witzenhausen (1745–1783), died without heirs, and the title became extinct.

Today, the name Witzenhausen is found in various forms and locations, and the family's legacy remains preserved through its contributions to European history.
