WitRussische

WitRussische is a term that has been used to refer to the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic, a constituent republic of the Soviet Union from 1920 to 1991. The name translates to "White Russia" in English, though this term is also historically associated with the Russian Empire. During its existence as a Soviet republic, the territory was known as the Byelorussian SSR.

The Byelorussian SSR was established in 1919, though its borders and governance evolved over time. It was a founding member of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1922. The republic played a significant role in the Soviet Union's industrial development and was heavily impacted by World War II, suffering immense destruction and loss of life.

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Byelorussian SSR declared its independence and became the Republic of Belarus. The term WitRussische is now largely considered an outdated or archaic descriptor for Belarus, with "Belarus" being the preferred and official name. Historical and linguistic contexts may still encounter the term, but it is not commonly used in contemporary discourse.
