Wirbelsäulenaufnahmen, also known as spinal imaging, refers to a range of medical imaging techniques used to visualize the bones, spinal cord, and surrounding tissues of the vertebral column. These methods are crucial for diagnosing a variety of conditions affecting the spine, from fractures and dislocations to degenerative diseases and tumors. The most common form of spinal imaging is X-ray, which uses electromagnetic radiation to create images of bone structures. X-rays are often the first step in evaluating spinal pain or trauma, helping to identify fractures, misalignments, or signs of arthritis.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) offers a more detailed view of soft tissues, including the spinal cord, intervertebral discs, and nerves. MRI is particularly useful for detecting herniated discs, spinal stenosis, infections, and tumors. It employs strong magnetic fields and radio waves to generate cross-sectional images of the spine without using ionizing radiation. Computed Tomography (CT) scans provide detailed cross-sectional images of both bone and soft tissue, offering greater detail than standard X-rays. CT scans are often used when X-rays are inconclusive or to assess complex fractures and bone abnormalities.

Other imaging techniques like bone scans can detect areas of increased bone activity, which may indicate fractures, infections, or metastatic cancer. Ultrasound is less commonly used for the spine itself but can be employed to examine superficial structures or in specific pediatric cases. The choice of imaging modality depends on the suspected diagnosis, the patient's symptoms, and any contraindications. These diagnostic tools are essential for guiding treatment decisions and monitoring the progression of spinal conditions.
