Wettability refers to the ability of a liquid to maintain contact with a solid surface, resulting from intermolecular interactions when the two are brought together. This property is quantified by the contact angle, which is the angle, tangent to the liquid surface, measured where a liquid-solid interface meets the three-phase contact line. A low contact angle indicates that the liquid spreads easily on the solid surface, meaning it is more wettable. Conversely, a high contact angle signifies that the liquid beads up and does not spread, indicating poor wettability.

Wettability is influenced by both the liquid's surface tension and the solid surface's surface energy. Liquids with low surface tension tend to spread more readily on surfaces with high surface energy. The chemical composition and physical structure of the solid surface play crucial roles. For instance, a clean, smooth surface will exhibit different wettability than a contaminated or rough one. Surface treatments, such as coatings or functionalization, can significantly alter a material's wettability, making it either more hydrophilic (water-loving) or hydrophobic (water-repelling).

The phenomenon of wettability is fundamental in various scientific and industrial applications. It is critical in processes like adhesion, where good wetting is necessary for strong bonding between surfaces. In printing and coating industries, controlled wettability ensures uniform distribution of inks and paints. In biology and medicine, it affects cell adhesion, protein adsorption, and the performance of implants and diagnostic devices. The oil and gas industry utilizes wettability principles to understand reservoir behavior and enhance oil recovery.
