Waterconserving refers to practices, technologies, and policies designed to reduce freshwater use and increase the efficiency of water use across sectors. It includes measures to minimize losses, substitute with less water-intensive options, and reuse water where appropriate. The emphasis is on reducing demand, improving supply reliability, and protecting aquatic ecosystems.

In households and buildings, waterconserving measures include low-flow fixtures such as toilets, faucets, and showerheads; high-efficiency appliances; smart irrigation controllers; rainwater harvesting; lawn alternatives; and prompt leak detection and repair. In agriculture, waterconserving practices involve efficient irrigation methods (drip and sprinkler scheduling), soil moisture monitoring, mulching and conservation tillage, crop selection suited to local rainfall, and rainwater capture.

In industry, waterconserving approaches include process optimization to reduce water intake, closed-loop cooling and recirculation, water reuse and treatment of wastewater for non-potable uses, and material substitution to lessen water intensity. Municipal and urban systems use water audits, leak control in distribution networks, drought contingency planning, and green infrastructure to manage stormwater and reduce losses.

Policy and governance play a role through water pricing that reflects scarcity, metering and data transparency, incentives for efficiency, building codes and appliance standards, and public education campaigns. The environmental benefits of waterconserving include reduced pressure on rivers and aquifers, lower energy use for pumping and treatment, and greater resilience to drought. Economic considerations include higher upfront costs and the potential for long-term savings, while challenges include ensuring water quality in reused streams and maintaining performance of efficiency measures.
