Warmteterugkoppeling, a Dutch term, translates to heat feedback or thermal feedback in English. It refers to a process where the output of a heating system is influenced by its own temperature or the temperature of its environment. This feedback mechanism is crucial for maintaining a stable and efficient temperature within a given space.

In practical applications, warmteterugkoppeling is most commonly seen in thermostats. A thermostat measures the ambient temperature and compares it to a desired setpoint. If the room temperature falls below the setpoint, the heating system is activated. As the room warms up, the thermostat detects this increase and, once the setpoint is reached or slightly exceeded, it signals the heating system to shut off. This cyclical process prevents overheating and conserves energy.

Beyond simple thermostats, more sophisticated warmteterugkoppeling systems can incorporate sensors that measure not only air temperature but also surface temperatures, humidity, or even the presence of people.
