Wahlstelle

Wahlstelle is a term used in German-speaking countries to designate a location or office responsible for conducting elections. It can refer to the physical polling place where voters cast their ballots as well as to the local electoral administration unit that coordinates election activities within a municipality or district.

In the most common sense, a Wahlstelle is the polling station (Wahllokal) where voters present themselves, prove eligibility, receive ballots, vote in secret, and deposit their completed ballots. The process is supervised by election officials and organized to ensure secrecy, accessibility, and proper handling of votes. After voting ends, the staff count the ballots and prepare preliminary results, which are transmitted to higher election authorities.

Wahlstellen are typically staffed by an election board (Wahlvorstand) and trained personnel (Wahlhelfer). They must follow legal provisions on opening hours, voter identification, ballot handling, and the safeguarding of ballot secrecy. In addition to in-person voting, many systems also manage or coordinate postal voting (Briefwahl), either at the Wahlstelle or through separate administrative units.

Legal framework and organization vary by country and region but generally derive from national or state election laws and municipal regulations. These rules define the designation of Wahlstellen, their accessibility, the issuance of ballots, the counting and reporting of results, and the measures to ensure transparency and integrity of the electoral process.
