Wachstumsplatten, also known as growth plates or epiphyseal plates, are areas of hyaline cartilage found in the long bones of children and adolescents. These plates are responsible for longitudinal bone growth. They are located near the ends of long bones, specifically at the metaphysis, which is the area between the epiphysis (the rounded end of the bone) and the diaphysis (the shaft of the bone). Within the growth plate, chondrocytes (cartilage cells) proliferate, mature, and eventually calcify, forming new bone tissue. This process allows bones to lengthen.
