WWTP stands for Wastewater Treatment Plant. These facilities are essential infrastructure designed to remove contaminants from wastewater, rendering it safe for discharge into the environment or for reuse. Wastewater, also known as sewage, originates from various sources including homes, businesses, and industrial processes. It contains a wide array of pollutants such as organic matter, suspended solids, pathogens, nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, and various chemicals.

The treatment process typically involves several stages. Primary treatment focuses on physically removing larger solids through screening and settling in large tanks. Secondary treatment utilizes biological processes, where microorganisms consume the dissolved organic matter. This often involves aeration to provide oxygen for the microbes. Tertiary treatment, or advanced treatment, is an optional but increasingly common stage that further refines the water, removing specific pollutants like nutrients, pathogens, or dissolved solids to meet stricter discharge standards or for reuse.

After treatment, the clarified water, known as effluent, is discharged. The solid material removed during treatment is called sludge, which itself undergoes further processing, often including dewatering and stabilization, before being disposed of or beneficially reused, for example, as fertilizer. WWTPs play a critical role in protecting public health and the environment by preventing the spread of disease and minimizing pollution of rivers, lakes, and oceans.
