Vöðvahreyfi

Vöðvahreyfi, often translated as muscle movement or motor function, refers to the complex process by which skeletal muscles contract and relax to produce voluntary or involuntary motion. This process is initiated by signals from the nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord. Neurons in the motor cortex of the brain send electrical impulses down the spinal cord, which then transmit these signals to specific motor neurons.

Each motor neuron innervates a group of muscle fibers, forming a motor unit. When a motor neuron fires, it releases a neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, at the neuromuscular junction. This neurotransmitter binds to receptors on the muscle fiber membrane, triggering a cascade of events that leads to muscle contraction. This involves the sliding of actin and myosin filaments within the muscle fiber, a process powered by adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

The strength and speed of muscle contraction can be modulated by recruiting more motor units or by increasing the frequency of motor neuron firing. Reflexes, such as the withdrawal reflex, demonstrate involuntary muscle movements that bypass conscious brain control, occurring through a reflex arc in the spinal cord. Disorders affecting vöðvahreyfi can result from damage to the nervous system, muscles themselves, or the neuromuscular junction, leading to conditions like paralysis, weakness, or tremors.
