Võrgustsõlm

Võrgustsõlm is an Estonian term that translates to "network node" or "network point." In the context of computer networks, it refers to any active electronic device connected to a network, capable of sending, receiving, or forwarding information. This encompasses a wide range of devices, from simple endpoints like computers and smartphones to more complex infrastructure components such as routers, switches, and servers.

The primary function of a võrgustsõlm is to participate in the communication flow within a network. Each võrgustsõlm typically has a unique identifier, such as an IP address or a MAC address, which allows it to be distinguished from other devices on the network. This identification is crucial for directing data packets to their intended destinations.

Võrgustsõlmed can be categorized based on their role. End devices, often referred to as hosts, are those that generate or consume network data, like a user's laptop accessing a website. Intermediate devices, such as switches and routers, are responsible for managing and directing the flow of data between different nodes and networks. Without these interconnected võrgustsõlmed, the seamless operation of modern communication systems would not be possible.
