Végtagcsont

Végtagcsont is the Hungarian term for limb bone. These are the bones that form the appendages of the body, specifically the arms and legs. In humans and other tetrapods, these limbs are crucial for locomotion, manipulation, and interaction with the environment. The limb bones are part of the appendicular skeleton, which contrasts with the axial skeleton that forms the central axis of the body.

The forelimbs, or arms, consist of the humerus (upper arm bone), the radius and ulna (forearm bones), and the bones of the hand, including the carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges. The hindlimbs, or legs, are composed of the femur (thigh bone), the tibia and fibula (lower leg bones), and the bones of the foot, comprising the tarsals, metatarsals, and phalanges.

Limb bones are typically long bones, characterized by their length relative to their width. They consist of a shaft called the diaphysis and two expanded ends called epiphyses. The diaphysis is primarily composed of compact bone, providing strength and support, while the epiphyses are made up of spongy bone, which contains red bone marrow responsible for blood cell production. The ends of the epiphyses are covered with articular cartilage, facilitating smooth movement within joints. The development and growth of these bones occur through ossification, a process that continues into young adulthood.
