Végbélbe

Végbélbe is a Hungarian term that translates to "rectum" in English. The rectum is the final section of the large intestine, terminating at the anus. It stores feces before they are eliminated from the body through defecation. The rectum is approximately 15 centimeters (6 inches) long and extends from the rectosigmoid junction, where the sigmoid colon ends, to the anal canal.

The wall of the rectum is composed of several layers, including the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis propria, and serosa. The mucosa is the innermost lining and contains specialized cells that secrete mucus, which lubricates the passage of stool. The muscularis propria is a layer of smooth muscle that contracts to propel feces towards the anus.

The rectum plays a crucial role in the process of defecation. When stool enters the rectum, it triggers stretch receptors in the rectal wall, signaling the brain that the urge to defecate is present. Voluntary control over defecation is exerted by the external anal sphincter, a muscle that can be consciously relaxed or contracted.

Conditions affecting the rectum can include proctitis (inflammation of the rectum), rectal prolapse (when the rectum protrudes from the anus), and rectal cancer. These conditions can cause symptoms such as pain, bleeding, changes in bowel habits, and a feeling of incomplete evacuation. Diagnosis and treatment depend on the specific condition and may involve medical history, physical examination, imaging studies, and various therapeutic interventions.
