Värähtelymodeja refer to the distinct patterns of vibration that a system can exhibit. These patterns are characterized by specific frequencies and shapes of displacement, known as mode shapes. Every object or system capable of vibrating possesses a set of these characteristic modes. For a simple system like a string, the fundamental mode is the lowest frequency at which it can vibrate, producing a single arc. Higher modes, also called overtones or harmonics, have progressively higher frequencies and more complex mode shapes with nodes (points of zero displacement) and antinodes (points of maximum displacement).

The concept of vibration modes is fundamental in many fields of physics and engineering. For instance, in structural engineering, understanding the natural vibration modes of a bridge or building is crucial for preventing resonance, a phenomenon where external forces matching a natural frequency can lead to catastrophic vibrations. In acoustics, the vibration modes of musical instruments determine the pitches and timbres they produce. The study of these modes often involves mathematical techniques like modal analysis, which decomposes complex vibrations into a sum of these simpler, fundamental modes.
