Väriherkkyyksiä, known in English as color sensitivity or color blindness, refers to a spectrum of conditions that affect an individual's ability to perceive certain colors. The most common form is red-green color blindness, where individuals have difficulty distinguishing between reds and greens. Less common are blue-yellow color blindness and complete color blindness, known as achromatopsia, where an individual sees no color at all, only shades of gray.

These conditions are typically inherited and are caused by genetic mutations that affect the cone cells in the retina, which are responsible for color vision. In rare cases, color blindness can be acquired due to age, disease, injury, or exposure to certain chemicals.

Diagnosis is usually made through a series of eye tests, such as the Ishihara plates, which use patterns of colored dots to reveal deficiencies in color perception. While there is no cure for inherited color blindness, various tools and strategies can help individuals adapt. These include specialized glasses or contact lenses that can enhance color discrimination for some, as well as educational and technological aids. Understanding one's specific type of color blindness is crucial for navigating daily life, from choosing clothes to interpreting traffic signals.
