Välilevyistä

Välilevyistä, colloquially known as slipped or herniated discs, are common spinal conditions. A spinal disc is a soft, gel-like cushion located between the vertebrae in the spine. These discs act as shock absorbers and allow for flexibility. A välilevy occurs when the soft inner material of the disc protrudes or bulges through a tear in the tougher outer layer. This protrusion can press on nearby nerves, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness.

The causes of välilevyt can be varied, including age-related degeneration, sudden strain from lifting heavy objects incorrectly, or repetitive movements. While often associated with the lower back, they can also affect the neck. Symptoms depend on the location and severity of the herniation. Lower back välilevyt may cause sciatica, a pain that radiates down the leg. Neck välilevyt can result in pain, numbness, or tingling in the arms or hands.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and imaging tests such as MRI or CT scans to visualize the spine and disc. Treatment approaches range from conservative measures like rest, pain medication, physical therapy, and exercise, to more invasive options such as epidural steroid injections or surgery if conservative treatments are ineffective or if there are significant neurological deficits. Many individuals experience relief with non-surgical interventions.
