Väikejärve

Väikejärve is a small rural settlement located in eastern Estonia, within the administrative boundaries of Põltsamaa Parish in Jõgeva County. The village lies approximately 12 kilometres south of the county capital, Jõgeva, and is situated near the banks of the river Emajõgi, which provides the area with fertile agricultural land and scenic natural surroundings.

The earliest documented references to Väikejärve date back to the late 17th century, when the area was part of a larger manorial estate. During the 19th century the village grew modestly, largely due to its proximity to the Emajõgi railway line, which facilitated the transport of local agricultural produce, especially barley and rye, to larger market towns. In the Soviet era, collective farming was introduced, and the village’s population peaked in the 1970s at around 350 residents.

Today Väikejärve sustains a small population of approximately 150 inhabitants, according to the most recent census. The economy remains predominantly agricultural, with a focus on crop cultivation and limited livestock rearing. In addition, the scenic landscape has attracted small-scale tourism, especially for activities such as fishing, hiking, and bird watching along the Emajõgi river valley.

Notable landmarks in Väikejärve include the 18th‑century church of St. Michael, which retains many original Baroque architectural elements, and the old manor house, now repurposed as a community cultural centre. A modest green corridor has been established along the riverbank to promote ecological conservation and recreational use. The village is also known for its annual harvest festival, held each autumn, which draws visitors from surrounding regions and showcases local crafts, cuisine, and traditional music.
