Választóbizottság

Választóbizottság, which translates to "electoral committee" or "polling committee" in English, is a term used in Hungarian election law. It refers to a body responsible for conducting elections at a specific polling station or within a defined electoral district. These committees are crucial for the practical implementation of the voting process, ensuring fairness and adherence to legal procedures.

The composition and powers of a választóbizottság are regulated by Hungarian electoral law. Typically, members are appointed from among eligible voters, often nominated by political parties or local authorities. The committee's primary duties include overseeing the opening and closing of polling stations, verifying voter eligibility, distributing ballot papers, and collecting and counting the votes. They are also responsible for maintaining order at the polling station and addressing any irregularities that may arise during the election.

In Hungary, there are different levels of electoral committees. At the most local level, there are polling station committees (szavazókörök választóbizottsága), which manage the voting process for a single polling district. Above these, there may be district-level committees responsible for overseeing elections within a larger electoral district. The work of these committees is vital for the integrity and transparency of the electoral system, ensuring that every vote is cast and counted according to the law. They act as the frontline implementers of election rules on election day.
