The most common interpretation relates to avalanches. These occur when snow, ice, or a combination of both detaches from a slope and cascades rapidly downhill. Factors contributing to snow avalanches include heavy snowfall, steep terrain, and temperature fluctuations. They can be triggered by natural events like seismic activity or simply by the instability of the snowpack itself.

The term "vyöryihin" can also be used more broadly to describe landslides or mudflows. A landslide involves the rapid movement of rock, earth, or debris down a slope, often exacerbated by heavy rainfall or seismic activity. Mudflows, a specific type of landslide, are characterized by a fluid or semi-fluid mass of water-saturated earth and debris that flows downhill. These can be particularly destructive due to their speed and the volume of material carried.

In some contexts, "vyöryihin" might also extend to rockfalls, where individual rocks or boulders detach from cliffs or steep slopes and tumble downwards. Regardless of the specific material, the core concept conveyed by "vyöryihin" is a sudden, uncontrolled descent of a substantial amount of matter from a higher elevation to a lower one.
