Vranje

Vranje is a city located in southern Serbia, in the Pčinja District. It is situated in a valley surrounded by the mountains of Rujan, Pleš, and Beli Kamen. The Vranje river flows through the city. Historically, Vranje has been an important crossroads connecting the Balkan Peninsula. Its strategic location has influenced its development and the cultures that have inhabited the area over centuries.

The earliest archaeological evidence suggests settlement in the Vranje area dates back to the Neolithic period. The city is first mentioned in historical records in the 11th century. Throughout its history, Vranje was part of various empires and states, including the Byzantine Empire, the medieval Serbian state, the Ottoman Empire, and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Under Ottoman rule, Vranje developed into a significant administrative and commercial center. It was finally incorporated into Serbia in 1878 after the Russo-Turkish War.
