Voyaging refers to long-distance travel by sea, typically undertaken on ships, boats, or other vessels. It encompasses exploration, trade, migration, scientific expeditions, and recreational sailing. The term is primarily maritime in scope, focusing on journeys that cross oceans or seas rather than short coastal hops.

Historically, voyaging enabled intercultural contact and the development of global trade networks. Early seafaring in the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, and Pacific facilitated exchange of goods, ideas, and technologies. Polynesian navigators, for example, used stars, ocean swells, wind patterns, and bird behavior to chart long voyages across vast distances. The later centuries saw the refinement of navigation through the magnetic compass, the astrolabe or sextant, accurate charts, and, in the 18th and 19th centuries, chronometers enabling longitude determination.

Life on a long voyage relies on provisioning, watch schedules, seamanship, sail handling, deck management, and routine maintenance. Voyaging has cultural and scientific significance by supporting exploration, education, and exchange among communities. Contemporary cruising and ocean-crossing races illustrate skill, endurance, and teamwork. Advances in meteorology, navigation technology, and vessel design continue to shape voyaging, while ongoing attention to safety, ethics, and environmental impact remains central.
