Vormalimis is a hypothetical genus of extinct flora, proposed based on fossilized impressions found in sedimentary rock formations dating back to the late Carboniferous period. The name is derived from the Latin words "vormalis," meaning worm-like, and "limus," meaning mud, referencing the filamentous appearance and inferred habitat of the organism.

The primary evidence for Vormalimis consists of thin, branching structures, often less than a millimeter in diameter, exhibiting a segmented or beaded appearance. These impressions are typically found in fine-grained shale and mudstone, suggesting a preference for aquatic or semi-aquatic environments such as ancient lakebeds or deltas. The branching pattern is irregular, with some specimens showing a degree of dichotomous division, while others appear more diffuse.

The biological classification of Vormalimis remains uncertain. Its filamentous nature has led to speculation that it may represent an early form of alga, a fungal filament, or possibly a primitive plant root system. Microscopic analysis of the fossilized material has yielded limited cellular detail, further complicating its precise identification. Researchers continue to study the existing fossil record for more complete specimens that could shed light on its morphology, reproductive strategies, and ecological role within Carboniferous ecosystems.
