Volvovolvere

Volvovolvere is a neologism in architectural discourse describing a design approach that uses rotating, interlocking, and reconfigurable volumetric masses to create adaptable buildings. The name combines Latin volvō, volvere ("to turn"), with the sense of turning or rolling forms.

At its core, volvovolvere envisions building volumes that rotate around a central axis or reciprocate against one another. Movements are typically limited to discrete angles and coordinated by a modular spine, a primary core, and articulated joints. Designers employ parametric modeling and simulation to optimize movement, daylight, ventilation, and structural performance while maintaining safety margins.

Applications include housing clusters that reconfigure to different family sizes, museums that adapt galleries for varying exhibitions, and pavilions that shift to alter views and solar gain. Proponents argue the approach can improve daylighting control, passive cooling, and the ability to respond to changing programs without major renovations.

Implementation remains largely experimental. Challenges include energy consumption for actuation, maintenance of moving parts, increased construction and control complexity, and higher initial costs. The term began appearing in architectural theory and speculative practice in the 2010s and is most common in academic and studio contexts rather than as a widespread built typology.
