Viðey

Viðey is a small island located in Kollafjörður bay, just off the coast of Reykjavík, Iceland. It is the largest island in the Kollafjörður area and is a popular destination for recreation and cultural activities. The island is easily accessible by a short ferry ride from Reykjavík harbor.

Historically, Viðey was an important religious center. The ruins of a medieval monastery, founded by Augustinian monks in the 13th century, can still be seen on the island. For centuries, Viðey was a significant agricultural area. Later, it became home to one of Iceland's first fishing villages.

In the modern era, Viðey has been transformed into a public park and a venue for art and cultural events. The most prominent landmark is Imagine Peace Tower, an outdoor work of art conceived by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon. The tower projects a beam of light into the sky and is illuminated annually from October 9th to December 8th. Other art installations are also scattered across the island.

The island offers walking paths, picnic areas, and opportunities for birdwatching. Visitors can explore the historical remnants, enjoy the natural beauty, and experience the art installations, making Viðey a unique and peaceful escape from the city. The island is largely uninhabited today, with only a few residents.
