Virtaushäviöille

Virtaushäviöille is a Finnish term that translates to "flow losses" or "head losses" in English. It refers to the reduction in energy that occurs as a fluid (such as water or air) flows through a pipe, channel, or other conduit. These losses are primarily due to friction between the fluid and the walls of the conduit, as well as turbulence generated within the flow itself.

There are two main types of flow losses. Major losses, often referred to as friction losses, are associated with the overall length of the pipe and the roughness of its internal surface. Minor losses, on the other hand, are caused by disturbances in the flow path, such as bends, valves, fittings, and sudden changes in pipe diameter. While called "minor," these losses can be significant in systems with many fittings.

Understanding and quantifying virtaushäviöille is crucial in the design and operation of fluid systems, including water supply networks, heating and cooling systems, and ventilation. By accounting for these energy losses, engineers can ensure that pumps are adequately sized, pipes are appropriately dimensioned, and that the system operates efficiently, delivering the required flow rate and pressure at the destination.
