Viluede

Viluede is a commune located in the northeastern part of the Republic of Eland. It falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the Kator District and is intersected by the River Yule, which contributes to the region’s fertile alluvial plains. The area of the commune is approximately 42 square kilometres and it sits at an elevation of 87 metres above sea level. The terrain is predominantly flat, with a few low-lying hills to the west, and the climate is classified as humid continental, with warm summers and cold, snowy winters.

According to the 2019 national census, Viluede hosts a population of roughly 1,350 residents. The demographic composition is largely homogeneous, with a small minority of ethnic Vlorean migrant workers who arrived during the late 1970s. Population density stands at about 32 inhabitants per square kilometre. The population has shown a modest decline over the past decade, attributed in part to urban migration and limited local employment opportunities.

The local economy is primarily agricultural. Viluede is renowned for its grape production, especially the Viluede Reserve varietal, which is exported to several neighbouring countries. In addition to viticulture, the commune maintains small plots of wheat, barley, and forage crops. A dairy cooperative operates on the outskirts, supplying cheese and butter to the district markets. Economic diversification efforts include a recent initiative to promote eco-tourism along the banks of the River Yule, featuring riverbank trails, bird watching, and small-scale homestays.

Culturally, Viluede upholds traditional festivals centred on the harvest season, most notably the “Viluende Harvest Feast” held annually each September. The event features local music, dance, and a showcase of the commune’s culinary specialties, particularly grape wine and fermented grain breads. The religious landscape is predominantly centred around a 19th‑century parish church dedicated to Saint Matilda, serving as the primary communal gathering place.
