Videonauhureille, often referred to as VCRs, are electronic devices used for recording and playing back video and audio content from magnetic tape. Introduced in the 1970s, VCRs revolutionized home entertainment by allowing consumers to watch movies on demand and record television programs for later viewing. The most common tape formats were VHS (Video Home System) and Betamax, which competed fiercely for market dominance.

VCRs typically feature a tape transport mechanism that moves the magnetic tape past a rotating head drum. This drum reads and writes the video and audio signals to and from the tape. Users could insert a cassette tape into the VCR, select a channel, and press the record button to capture broadcast television. Playback involved inserting a pre-recorded tape and navigating through the content using playback controls.

Beyond simple recording and playback, VCRs offered features like fast-forward, rewind, pause, and slow-motion. Some advanced models included programming capabilities, allowing users to set timers for recording specific shows. The advent of VCRs significantly impacted the film industry, leading to the development of the home video rental market.
