Vesztességes is a Hungarian term that translates to "lossy" in English. It is primarily used in the context of data compression and information theory. When data is compressed in a lossy manner, some information is discarded to achieve a smaller file size. This is in contrast to lossless compression, where all original data can be perfectly reconstructed from the compressed version.

Lossy compression techniques are widely employed for multimedia files such as images (JPEG), audio (MP3), and video (MPEG). The rationale behind this approach is that the human perception of these media is not infinitely sensitive to detail. Therefore, certain data that is unlikely to be noticed by a listener or viewer can be removed without significantly degrading the perceived quality. For instance, in audio compression, frequencies outside the typical human hearing range or quiet sounds masked by louder ones might be eliminated. In image compression, subtle color variations or fine details in areas of low contrast might be sacrificed.
