Vestibulaarhaigused refers to a group of disorders affecting the vestibular system, which is responsible for balance and spatial orientation. This system is located in the inner ear and works in conjunction with the eyes and proprioceptors in the muscles and joints to maintain equilibrium. When the vestibular system malfunctions, it can lead to a variety of symptoms, most notably dizziness and vertigo.

Dizziness can manifest in several ways, including a feeling of lightheadedness, unsteadiness, or a sensation of floating. Vertigo, a more specific type of dizziness, is characterized by a false sensation that the individual or their surroundings are moving or spinning. These symptoms can be intermittent or constant and can significantly impact a person's quality of life, affecting their ability to perform daily activities, work, and even walk safely.

There are numerous causes of vestibular disorders. These can include inner ear infections (labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis), benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Ménière's disease, and even less common conditions like vestibular migraines or acoustic neuromas. Trauma to the head, certain medications, and aging can also contribute to vestibular dysfunction.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, a physical examination, and specific vestibular function tests. Treatment approaches vary depending on the underlying cause and may include medications to manage symptoms, vestibular rehabilitation therapy (a form of physical therapy designed to retrain the brain to compensate for vestibular deficits), and sometimes surgical interventions for specific conditions. Early diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial for improving outcomes and minimizing the long-term effects of these disorders.
