Vestibulaarhäire

Vestibulaarhäire refers to a dysfunction of the vestibular system, the sensory system responsible for providing the brain with information about motion, head position, and spatial orientation. This system is located in the inner ear and includes the semicircular canals and the otolith organs. When the vestibular system is not functioning correctly, it can lead to a variety of symptoms, most notably dizziness and imbalance.

The symptoms of a vestibularhäire can vary greatly depending on the specific cause and the individual. Common complaints include vertigo, which is a sensation of spinning or the environment moving, and disequilibrium, a feeling of unsteadiness or unbalance. Other possible symptoms include nausea, vomiting, nystagmus (involuntary eye movements), difficulty concentrating, and sensitivity to motion. These symptoms can be intermittent or constant and can significantly impact a person's daily life, affecting their ability to walk, drive, work, and perform other activities.

Vestibularhäire can arise from numerous causes. These can include inner ear infections or inflammation (such as labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis), benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Meniere's disease, head injuries, certain medications, and neurological conditions like stroke or multiple sclerosis. Age-related changes in the vestibular system can also contribute to balance problems in older adults. Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, a physical examination, and specific vestibular function tests to assess how well the inner ear and brain are working together. Treatment strategies are tailored to the underlying cause and may include medications, vestibular rehabilitation therapy, and lifestyle modifications.
