Vertinimidae

Vertinimidae is a family-level taxon within the gastropods whose recognition is not uniform across modern classifications. In some systems it is treated as a distinct family; in others it is not recognized or regarded as a synonym or subfamily of related groups. As a result, the circumscription of Vertinimidae has remained unsettled, with different authorities proposing different genera and species placements.

There is no universally accepted list of genera or species assigned to Vertinimidae. Some authorities have recognized a small number of genera within the family, while others place similar taxa in other families such as Vertiginidae or Vitrinidae. The characters used to distinguish Vertinimidae from related families have varied, and molecular studies have not yet produced a broad consensus.

Where recognized, members are described as minute snails. Shell morphology and soft-tissue anatomy used to diagnose the group vary among sources, and no single diagnostic character is universally agreed upon. Habitats are reported as terrestrial in leaf litter and damp soils, with some lineages examined in freshwater settings; however, habitat associations again depend on the taxonomic treatment used.

Because its status depends on the prevailing framework, major databases such as MolluscaBase and the World Register of Marine Species differ in their treatment of Vertinimidae and in listing of included genera. Many researchers underscore the need for revised revisions that integrate detailed morphology and molecular data to stabilize the circumscription of the group.
