Vertebralväggarna

Vertebralväggarna, also known as the vertebral columns or spine, are a series of bones that run along the back of the human body, providing structural support and protection for the spinal cord. The spine is composed of 33 individual vertebrae, which are categorized into five distinct regions: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, and coccyx. The cervical region consists of the first seven vertebrae, the thoracic region includes the next twelve, the lumbar region comprises the five vertebrae below the thoracic region, and the sacrum and coccyx are fused bones at the base of the spine.

Each vertebra is composed of a body, a vertebral arch, and a neural spine. The body provides the primary weight-bearing surface, while the vertebral arch encloses and protects the spinal cord. The neural spine projects posteriorly and articulates with the neural spine of the adjacent vertebra, forming the intervertebral foramina through which the spinal nerves exit.

The spine plays a crucial role in maintaining posture, facilitating movement, and protecting the spinal cord. It also serves as an attachment point for muscles and ligaments, contributing to the body's overall stability and mobility. The spine is a complex structure that undergoes significant changes throughout life, including growth, development, and aging. Understanding the anatomy and function of the spine is essential for diagnosing and treating various spinal conditions, such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and scoliosis.
