Veronja

Veronja is a town and municipality known for its well-preserved medieval core and surrounding farmland. Located in a river valley with gentle hills to the north, the town covers an area of roughly 40 square kilometers and has a temperate climate influenced by nearby uplands.

The earliest records from the 12th century mention Veronja as a fortified settlement protecting the valley trade routes. Over the centuries it expanded around the fortress and market square, undergoing significant modernization in the 19th and early 20th centuries after administrative reforms.

Agriculture forms the backbone of the local economy, with vineyards, olive groves, and cereal crops. Small-scale manufacturing and service sectors support employment, while commuter links connect Veronja to larger urban centers. The town is served by a regional road network and a rail line with regular service.

As of the latest estimates, Veronja has about 8,500 residents. The community speaks Veronjan, with a minority dialect also used in local culture; education is provided in Veronjan and the national language. The town maintains cultural institutions such as a museum, a public library, and a cultural center that hosts concerts and exhibitions.

Veronja is governed by a municipal council headed by a mayor. Notable sites include the standing remnants of the Veronja Fortress, the Parish Church of Saint Maria, and the historic Town Hall in the central square. The annual Veronja Festival draws visitors with folk music, markets, and crafts.
