The main types of wear are flank wear and crater wear. Flank wear occurs on the flank face of the tool, where it rubs against the workpiece. Crater wear happens on the rake face of the tool, caused by the sliding action of chips over the surface.

Several factors contribute to verktygsnötning. These include the cutting speed, the feed rate, the depth of cut, the material being machined, and the properties of the cutting tool itself, such as its hardness and toughness. Lubrication and cooling are also important; inadequate coolant can accelerate wear. The temperature generated at the cutting zone is a significant factor, as higher temperatures can soften the tool material and increase the rate of wear.

The progression of verktygsnötning can be visualized through wear curves, which plot tool life against cutting parameters. As wear increases, cutting forces rise, surface finish deteriorates, and dimensional accuracy of the workpiece can be compromised. Eventually, the tool reaches a point where it is no longer effective and must be replaced or resharpened.
