Verenkiertopysähdys, also known as circulatory arrest or cardiac arrest, is a critical medical condition where the heart abruptly stops pumping blood effectively. This cessation of blood circulation leads to a rapid drop in oxygen supply to vital organs, particularly the brain. Without immediate intervention, irreversible damage and death can occur within minutes.

The causes of verenkiertopysähdys are varied and can include severe heart conditions like myocardial infarction (heart attack) or arrhythmias. Other contributing factors may involve trauma, respiratory failure, drowning, electrocution, or drug overdose. In some instances, the cause may remain undetermined.

Recognizing the signs of verenkiertopysähdys is crucial for initiating prompt lifesaving measures. These signs typically include sudden collapse, unresponsiveness, absence of breathing or abnormal gasping, and lack of pulse. Immediate action, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) if available, significantly increases the chances of survival and positive outcomes.
