Verdrängungsvolumens

Verdrängungsvolumen, often translated as displacement volume or simply displacement, refers to the volume of fluid that a submerged object or a moving object displaces. This concept is fundamental in physics, particularly in fluid mechanics and Archimedes' principle. When an object is immersed in a fluid, it occupies a certain space. The volume of fluid that would have occupied that same space is the object's displacement volume.

For floating objects, the displacement volume is equal to the volume of the submerged part of the object. According to Archimedes' principle, the buoyant force acting on a submerged object is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. This principle explains why ships float: the weight of the water they displace is equal to their own weight.

In the context of engines, displacement volume refers to the swept volume of an engine's cylinders. It is the volume that is swept by the piston as it moves from its lowest point (bottom dead center) to its highest point (top dead center) within the cylinder. This volume is typically measured in cubic centimeters (cc) or liters. The total displacement volume of an engine is calculated by multiplying the swept volume of a single cylinder by the number of cylinders. A larger displacement volume generally indicates a more powerful engine, as it can process a larger quantity of air-fuel mixture per cycle.
