Verdauungswege
Verdauungswege refers to the complex biological processes and anatomical structures involved in breaking down food into absorbable nutrients. This intricate system begins in the mouth where food is mechanically broken down by chewing and chemically by enzymes in saliva, initiating the digestion of carbohydrates. From the mouth, food travels down the esophagus to the stomach, a muscular organ that further breaks down food through churning and the action of gastric juices, primarily hydrochloric acid and pepsin, which start protein digestion.
The partially digested food, now called chyme, then moves into the small intestine, the primary site for
Undigested material then passes into the large intestine, where water is reabsorbed, and electrolytes are absorbed.
