Vercingetorix was a Gallic leader who played a pivotal role in resisting Roman conquest during the Gallic Wars (58–50 BC). Born around 82 BC in what is now central France, he was a member of the Arverni tribe, one of the most powerful in Gaul. His name, derived from the Celtic words *vercingo-* (meaning "strong") and *-drix* (leader), translates roughly to "king of warriors."
