Ventotene

Ventotene is a small Italian island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, part of the Lazio region and the Pontine Islands archipelago. It lies off the coast of the province of Latina and is administered as the comune di Ventotene. The island is known for its compact size, natural harbor, and accessibility from the mainland by ferry and hydrofoil.

In antiquity the island was called Pandateria or Pandataria. It is notable in Roman history as a place of exile for political figures, most famously Julia the Elder, who was banished there by her husband, Emperor Tiberius, in the early first century CE. In the 20th century, Ventotene became associated with the Ventotene Manifesto, drafted by Altiero Spinelli and Ernesto Rossi during exile, which contributed to the development of European federalist ideas.

Ventotene features a volcanic, rocky landscape with a protected coastal environment. It hosts a marine protected area together with the nearby Santo Stefano island, reflecting the importance of its surrounding waters for biodiversity and tourism. The island’s economy relies on tourism, fishing, and local services, with a small permanent population that expands during the summer season.
