Ventiliators

Ventiliators are devices used to assist or entirely take over the function of breathing for individuals who are unable to do so adequately on their own. They are commonly found in hospitals, particularly in intensive care units, and are essential for managing respiratory failure caused by various medical conditions. These conditions can include pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations, severe asthma attacks, and neurological disorders affecting respiratory muscles.

The primary goal of a ventiliator is to deliver oxygen to the lungs and remove carbon dioxide from the body. This is achieved by mechanically pushing air into the lungs at a set rate and volume. There are different modes of ventilation, allowing healthcare professionals to customize the support based on the patient's specific needs. Some modes provide full support, while others offer partial assistance, encouraging the patient to breathe on their own.

Ventiliators can be invasive or non-invasive. Invasive ventilation typically involves inserting a tube into the trachea (endotracheal tube) or directly into the windpipe through the neck (tracheostomy tube). Non-invasive ventilation is delivered through a mask that fits over the nose and mouth. The use of ventiliators requires careful monitoring by trained medical personnel to ensure proper function and to manage potential complications such as lung injury or infection.
