Vendicari

Vendicari is a nature reserve located on the southeastern coast of Sicily, Italy. Situated in the province of Syracuse, it spans an area of approximately 1500 hectares and is renowned for its rich biodiversity, particularly its importance as a stopover for migratory birds. The reserve encompasses a variety of habitats, including coastal wetlands, salt pans, sandy beaches, and Mediterranean scrubland.

The salt pans, historically used for salt extraction, are now a crucial feeding and resting ground for numerous bird species, especially during their spring and autumn migrations. Waders, flamingos, herons, and various duck species can be observed here. Birdwatching is a popular activity, with several observation points and hides strategically placed throughout the reserve.

Vendicari also boasts significant archaeological and historical sites. Ruins of an ancient tonnara, a tuna fishery, stand as a testament to its past economic importance. Further inland, remnants of ancient settlements and Byzantine churches, such as the Tredici Cantoni, add a historical dimension to the natural beauty of the area. The reserve is accessible to the public, with walking trails allowing visitors to explore its diverse landscapes and observe its wildlife and historical features. It is a protected area managed by the Sicilian Region's Department of Regional Patrimony.
