Vektorrechnungen, also known as vector calculus or vector analysis, is a branch of mathematics that deals with differentiation and integration of vector fields. It is particularly important in physics and engineering for describing phenomena such as electromagnetism, fluid dynamics, and mechanics.

A vector is a quantity that has both magnitude and direction, often represented graphically as an arrow. Vector operations include addition, subtraction, scalar multiplication, dot product, and cross product. Vector addition and subtraction follow geometric rules, while scalar multiplication scales the magnitude of a vector. The dot product produces a scalar value and is related to the angle between two vectors. The cross product, defined for three-dimensional vectors, results in a new vector perpendicular to both original vectors.

Vector fields assign a vector to each point in space. Vektorrechnungen provides tools to analyze these fields. Differentiation of vector fields involves concepts like gradient, divergence, and curl. The gradient of a scalar field produces a vector field, indicating the direction and rate of greatest increase. Integration in vector calculus includes line integrals, surface integrals, and volume integrals. Line integrals calculate the work done by a force along a curve. Surface integrals are used to calculate flux through a surface. Volume integrals are used to find total quantities over a three-dimensional region. Fundamental theorems like the gradient theorem, divergence theorem, and Stokes' theorem relate these different types of integrals, simplifying complex calculations and providing deeper insights into the behavior of vector fields.
